How do you inspire ones that do not care to be inspired?
When we as individuals and as leaders get to a point where we asks such question, we need to first become aware of our own state of mind.
When you change the way you look at people, the people that you look at will change.
Unfortunately, we do not take the time to become aware of what specifically will inspire the hearts and minds of those around us.
I have had the pleasure lately of discussing ideas with a an individual who runs a construction and development company.
This industry is dictated by tenders and ‘cost slashing’ for every job required to get a high rise standing. Here is an individual that wants to change the industry as it stands. Create higher loyalty, more productivity, greater fun and satisfaction for all those involved.
We have to keep in mind few critical elements when we are faced with such a challenging yet inspiring vision.
1. The only way you know that your vision is big enough to chase, a vision that will change the face of your industry is by hearing such remarks as “why would you do that?, that would never work, no one does it this way…”
In short, get excited about such words and negativity. They are nothing more then thoughts of fear; fear of failure and fear of success. It is their way of saying show me how it can be done as the present way is not what I care for.
Any dead fish can float downstream. In order to inspire a vision you need to be willing to swim upstream against the current.
2. A vision alone is not good enough. The vision must excite the minds and touch the hearts of those involved, at every level.
It is like creating a habit, you have to do what you want created for 21 days straight and then it becomes part of your everyday life. When it comes to people in your business and industry, your vision should be in front of them in one way or another all the time.
3. Get your vision documented, a small but inspiring document. Very crucial. Do not worry about all the details of how and what will be done. Now others can sit on their own and get excited about it. The main point is that now they are not just hearing you talk about the vision but they have something to hold and see. In time they will be the first to give you their input on how it can be refined.
4. At times it is not about what new material one can find, as that road is endless. I think one should use what resonates best with them and just run with it. Life is about refining what you did yesterday so you can be more effective and efficient today. The most important thing is that you start, as starting is the hardest part of creating momentum.
5. The most critical element of inspiring a vision. Get those around you to help create and refine your vision. Get them to give their inputs and in turn they will take ownership.
